Volunteering is one of the fundamental pillars of the L’Arche Communities. Living together and the relationships between people with and without intellectual disabilities are part of our way of life, ensuring that differences become more blurred than in other contexts.
Why volunteer?
Both international and local volunteering contribute to improving the quality of life of service users and promoting their autonomy and self-determination.
Volunteers offer individual and small-group support, establishing close and empathetic bonds that foster a more family-like environment. They also promote social inclusion and help give visibility to the abilities, skills, and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities.
Who are we?
We usually have a team of between six and eight international volunteers: six collaborate in the homes and one or two in the occupational workshops. We also receive support from several local volunteers.
Throughout the year, we organize outings to get to know the surroundings, share experiences, and strengthen group bonds. In addition, international volunteers can participate in Catalan and Spanish classes to facilitate their communication and integration into the community.
Local volunteering
Local volunteering allows for collaboration with Els Avets in a flexible way that is compatible with daily life. Volunteers can participate in activities, outings, celebrations, or accompaniment, sharing their time, hobbies, and skills with the people in the community.
Each collaboration is adapted to the availability, interests, and preferences of each volunteer.
Host families
Host families play a very important role in accompanying international volunteers. They offer them a space of trust and proximity outside the community, help them get to know the culture and the environment, and make it easier for them to feel more integrated during their stay.
This hosting can consist of sharing a meal, an activity, a family celebration, or a weekend, and represents an enriching experience for both the family and the volunteer.

The philosophy of the L’Arche Communities, with whom we are federated, aims to offer a model of individualized care for people with intellectual disabilities within a family lifestyle. For this reason, it encourages volunteering with the idea of promoting three values: improving the quality of life of supported individuals, fostering solidarity and friendship with other L’Arche communities, and strengthening links between youth and social integration services.
